Because of the outstanding charity work they do, Ascension Parish President declared May 18, 2017 as “Anything Outdoors – Helping Kids” Day. Anything Outdoors-Helping Kids is a 501(c) 3 organization that was started June of 2016.
It was inspired by the illness of Preston Heath, who was diagnosed with a rare and lifethreatening blood disorder. Preston endured months of unsuccessful treatments before finally transferring to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee, where aggressive chemotherapy followed by a bone marrow transplant finally cured him of his disease.
In gratitude, Preston’s parents, Jacob and Renee Heath, along with Micha Mire, Matt Bourgeois, Jordan Villenurve, Chet Babin, Chase Babin, Wesley Templet, Brooks Moran, and Ryan Honea formed Anything Outdoors – Helping Kids as a means to sponsor St. Jude families, and give money to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Dreams Come True Foundation. Beginning in 2018, Anything Outdoors – Helping Kids will bring sick children outdoors on hunting and fishing excursions.
“This group is an example of what makes Ascension Parish great,” said Matassa. “They faced adversity head on, they defeated it, and then they organized to help others.”
