The Gonzales Garden Club ended their year of civic activities with a May 3, 2017 ceremonial meeting at the Clarion Inn on Hwy 30 and a Mike Anderson’s style luncheon hosted by Members Cynthia Cagnolatti and Conchita Richey. Winners of a flood grant, the club flower show, and the election of club officers were announced at this season’s final gathering.
The Louisiana Garden Club Federation had collected donations for flood victims and accepted grant proposals. The St. Amant High School 4-H Club won the grant in collaboration with the Gonzales Garden Club. Grant Committee Chairman Jamie Trisler presented a check for $6,000 to St. Amant High Teacher/4H Sponsor Mandy Delaune and St. Amant High School Principal Mia Edwards to replace a tool shed and garden equipment destroyed by the August flood. The 4-H Club and the Future Farmers of America at St. Amant High will be able to resume their many horticulture activities such as an annual plant sale that raises money for worthwhile service projects for the community.
Public Relations Coordinator of the Ascension Parish Library Anita Young announced People’s Choice Awards tallied from 158 votes at the Annual Floral Design Exhibit held in April. The first place award went to Patti Mouton; Marilyn Rice and Mary Jo Pohlig tied for second place, and Barbara McCormick won third place.
Corresponding Secretary Mary Jo Pohlig crafted individual dried rose bud boutonnieres for club members who achieved a year of perfect attendance. She presented these unique mementos to Members Janis D’Benedetto, Gwen Heck, Barbara McCormick, Priscilla Monson, Patti Mouton, Loretta Ramirez, and Jamie Trisler.
Treasurer Cynthia Cagnolatti reported details of a successful April 28 fundraiser plant/back sale. President Monson recapped club activities held during her four years as the club’s president. She has particularly enjoyed helping others through garden therapy, horticulture programs, Yard of the Month recognitions and donations to flood victims. President Monson gave each club officer a small metal trellis and each member a decorative garden animal figurine. Vice President Jamie Trisler presented Monson with a painting of flowers.
The meeting’s final order of business was the installation of officers for the 2017-19 term. Member Conchita Richey hosted the ceremony by presenting each new officer with a handmade shabby chic corsage. Each corsage was accented with a different color to symbolize the responsibilities of the office. Officers assuming their positions in September of 2017 are President Jamie Trisler, Vice President Mary Jo Pohlig, Treasurer Cynthia Cagnolatti, Recording Secretary Gwen Heck, Corresponding Secretary Lorraine Gautreau, Parliamentarian Barbara McCormick, and Historian Ellen Richmond.
The monthly horticulture hint is to protect ripening tomatoes from birds by covering the plants with bird netting. This summer, the garden club board will plan 2017-18 projects mindful of pollinator gardens and native plants.
