GONZALES – In a basketball season that saw the top two seeds in the post-season attained by local teams, no one advanced to the state tournament and all but one went no further than the second round.
East Ascension’s basketball programs garnered the No. 1 seed in boys play and second seed in girls basketball but both lost on the road. Donaldsonville’s boys and girls both lost in the second round and Ascension Christian was the lone quarterfinalist as the Lady Lions advanced to the third round for the first time ever.
The Spartans (27-7), coached by Barry Whittington, gained the top seed in the Class 5A Boys post-season but were ousted in a low-scoring 37-35 affair with No. 16 seed Slidell after defeating last seed West Jefferson 75-59 in the first round. No. 18 seed St. Amant (20-12), coached by Travis Uzee, fell to 15th seeded Zachary 65-46 in the first round and 25th seeded Dutchtown (17-14), coached by Patrick Hill, also went down in the bi-district round 54-41.
No. 8 seed Donaldsonville (19-17), coached by Lionel Gilbert, won a Class 3A first round game over 25th seed Bogalusa 67-56 but fell to No. 9 Jennings 67-63 in the second round. The 11th seeded Lady Tigers advanced to the second round with a 65-29 victory over Port Allen but fell to No. 6 Albany 60-45 in the second round.
The Lady Spartans went into the post-season on a 22-game winning streak and drew the No. 2 seed under coach Dennis Chandler but fell in a close game with No. 18 Pineville 48-46 in the second round after bouncing Mandeville 51-32.
Ascension Christian drew the No. 8 seed under coach Michelle Evans and a first round bye in the Division IV bracket. The Lady Lions defeated No. 9 St. Edmund 64-37 in the regionals to advance to the quarterfinals where they fell to top seed Houma Christian 72-49.
The Lady Griffins, coached by Annette Lowery, were seeded No. 13 and won a first-round playoff game over Fontainebleau 62-43 before falling to No. 4 Denham Springs 48-32.
No. 14 seed Ascension Catholic, coached by Kylon Green, drew the No. 14 seed in the Division IV boys playoffs and defeated 19th seeded False River 75-58 in the first round before falling to No. 3 Hamilton Christian 89-53 in the second round.
