BATON ROUGE – Two women from Ascension Parish have been selected Esprit de Femme Award winners and will be honored at the LSU Women’s Center fifth annual Sunrise Celebration.
Among those honored this year are Tanya Whitney of Sorrento and Alsie Dunbar of Gonzales who were selected amongst 30 nominations of someone who has made advancements for women in the state.
The event is part of Women’s History Month and the award was established in 2009 to acknowledge eight women and one man who have made strides to advance the status of women in Louisiana.
Whitney is a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Army and a leader in the VFW Post 3693 and Women Veterans of Louisiana. She also conducts education workshops on the role women serve in the military.
Dunbar has been scientist and engineer for the past 18 years in the chemical industry and has created a STEM GEMS Mentoring Project to expose young girls to sciences, math, technology and engineering.
The reception for the 2017 Esprit de Femme Award winners will be held March 30 at Boudreaux’s in Baton Rouge.
