After a 31-year career and 15 years at Dutchtown High School, Benny Saia is stepping down as head football coach and athletic director. Saia’s resignation as an athletic director and head coach will be effective March 31, 2017. He will continue to serve Ascension schools as a teacher.
“After 31 years, it is time to step away from coaching and reevaluate where I am personally. This was a very hard decision,” said Saia. “I feel extremely blessed and honored to have worked at Dutchtown for the last 15 years with great people and a great program. I wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world, but I also believe this is an opportunity for someone else to bring new ideas to the Griffins program.”
During his 15 years at DTHS, Saia compiled a 110-55 record and four district championships (2010, 2011, 2013, 2015). Since starting the Griffin football program, 56 players went on to play in college, and three are in the National Football League: New York Giants SAF Landon Collins, San Francisco 49ers DB Eric Reid and Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy.
“Benny and I served as head football coaches at different Baton Rouge schools in the 1990s. I always had a great deal of respect for him and the work that he does. It was a privilege to serve on the same campus with him when I was principal of Dutchtown High School,” said Ascension Public Schools Superintendent David Alexander. “We are very grateful for his dedication and commitment to building and sustaining a strong athletic program at DTHS since the school was founded. He will be greatly missed.”
“I have so much respect for Coach Saia and the program that he has created. He is leaving a legacy not just on the field, but also in the lives of each student-athlete he has nurtured, supported and pushed to be better,” said Dutchtown High Principal Carli Francois. “We are fortunate that he is remaining here as a teacher and will be a valuable asset as we transition to new leadership for our athletic program.”
Dutchtown will begin a search in the coming weeks for a new head football coach and athletic director. The position will be posted at www.apsb.org/applynow.
