Camille Melancon is an eight grader at St. Amant Middle. Like most girls her age, she is an energetic teenager with an enthusiasm for life and all things in it. What sets Camile aside is that she has taken that enthusiasm to an entirely new level and is putting actions behind her passions.
Camille decided last October to find ways to volunteer and to learn from and share in new experiences. Her mother Candace reached out to local agency Volunteer Ascension, and decided to take part in a mid-year enrollment for ConnecTEENS.
Camille and Candace participated in the annual Make a Difference Day cookie social at Azalea Estate. The time spent with senior citizens in our community left quite an impact, and Camille decided that she wanted to do all she could to volunteer with the elderly and to give back to them in some way.
Volunteer Ascension and Candace created a Teen Volunteer Challenge program. A book club was started, Camille would read to the elderly and hold plot, character and theme discussions upon completion of each book.
Arrangements were made with Magnolia Estates. The once a week book club flourished that before too long, Camile was visiting twice weekly, just for the opportunity to read and to learn from those men and women she had come to love and regard as friends.
Through Camile’s dedication and the support of her mother Candace and Volunteer Ascension, Camille has continued her thriving program and created a true enjoyment for some of our dearest residents.
Well done, Camile. The future is in the hands of young people like yourself, and we’re proud to know that caring for each other within our community will remain important for many years to come.
